been lurking here forever pulling ideas for a build, figured it was time to actually put up a rig. i wanted a clean low mile platform to build into a weekend overlander, roof rack, rooftop tent, a drawer system in the back, the usual. i run up to Mark Twain National Forest most weekends when the weather is decent and i do one longer run out to Colorado every summer, so i did not want a beat down trail rig somebody had already flogged. i wanted a boring honest starting point i could build my own way.
i live in Columbia so i was watching the lots within a couple hours of me. most of what i found in my range was either high miles or had clearly been off road hard, aftermarket lift thrown on, tires chewed, skid plates hammered up. a truck that has been wheeled by somebody who did not know what they were doing is not a base, it is a project you inherit.
found a 2019 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road on boonvilleautosales.com, about 58k miles, one owner. bone stock except for a set of aftermarket wheels the prior owner had put on and left with it. their price was a few grand under what the same year 4Runner with more miles was listed for at the bigger stores around here and up in Jeff City.
since i am only about 40 minutes from boonville i just drove over to the lot and looked at it myself instead of doing the whole ship it sight unseen thing. i crawled all over it. checked the frame for the rust these get on the rear crossmember, looked at the skid plates for hard hits, got it up and looked at the diffs and the sway bar and the lower control arms for any sign it had been wheeled hard or lifted and put back. it was clean. stock suspension, no lift ever on it, skids had light scrapes but nothing bent, frame was solid with just surface stuff.
the one honest fault, those aftermarket wheels have the wrong offset and they poke a little and rubbed at full stuff. the guy at the boonville lot told me that straight up before i even asked, said the factory wheels did not come with the trade. minor, i am going to run a proper set anyway for the tire size i want. bought it, easy paperwork, drove it home the same afternoon.
anybody else buying a clean stock 4x4 as a build base instead of somebody elses finished project? and what did you add first when you started building yours out.
